Introduction Class

Who should assist the introduction class?
The introduction class at Allanengen School is a class for all new pupils with minority languages of the age between 7 and 13 (2nd – 7th level) residents in the municipality of Kristiansund.

It’s a mixed class concerning age with priority on Norwegian language learning. The class is divided into two groups, one for pupils from 2nd – 4th level and one from 5th – 7th level. A 1st level class will be organized from autumn 2012

Teachers
Contact teacher in group 1 is Kirsti I. Spjelkavik and contact teacher in group 2 is Åshild Loftås. I addition, Patricia Levinsen, Stian Golmen and Elin Levinsen Lyngstad, work with both groups.

There are two bilingual assistants in Arabic and Polish, Mohamed Abdallah and Ewa Breivik.

Bilingual training
Some Arabic, Polish and Somali spoken pupils may have the possibility to receive lessons in their mother tongue / or to have a bilingual assistant.

Coordinator
Elin Levinsen Lyngstad is the coordinator for the introduction class. She is responsible for the organization and the support system of this class. Any questions concerning teaching, organization, guest pupils at new school, homework assistance or expressive group should be addressed to her.

Norwegian training and mapping
The introduction class follows the curriculum for basic Norwegian for language minorities subject. This is a level based plan regardless of age. The pupils must complete level 1 and have started level 2 before transfer to their local school. In addition to Norwegian training, the pupils will receive courses in society and science, topics treating social skills, mathematics, gymnastics, music and arts and craft.

Time perspective
The time needed to learn Norwegian is very individual. The number of months in the Introduction class may vary from 10 months to maximum two years. Mapping tests confirm when the pupil can be transferred to their local school. The contact teacher and the coordinator choose the right moment for the transfer. Parents and the local school will be informed well in advance.

Guest pupil
Before transfer to the local school, the pupils will visit the school regularly one day per week. In 2011/2012 this day is Wednesday. A smooth transition from the Introduction class to the local school makes the transition easier and more comforting for the pupils.

Transition meeting
The teachers in the Introduction class organize a transition meeting with the local school. All information and analysis are transferred during this meeting.

Homework time
Homework assistance is a formal right from 1st -4thlevel. For the introduction class there will be assisted homework twice a week.

In 2011/2012 the schedule is as follows:
Group 1: Wednesday and Thursday from 1.20 -1.50 p.m.
Group 2: Wednesday from 1.20-2.20 p.m.
Assisted homework is mandatory for the pupils in the Introduction class.
Kristiansund Frivilligsentral – Kristiansund Volunteer Central offers homework help to pupils from the Introduction class on Mondays from 2.05 – 3.00 p.m.

Expressive group
A preventive measure to help children process difficult experiences. This may be loss, fear, grief, sadness or other feelings. The expressive group helps to process the migration situation and missing experienced by moving to a new country. Expressive group takes place on Tuesdays after school.

Expressive group is a cooperative project between the introduction class and BUP (The children and young people’s psychiatric out-patient clinic)

Leisure
Pupils in the introduction class may assist without charge at a physical education course on Tuesdays from 6-715 p.m. (1st to 4th level). The elder (5th – 7th level) may assist to a course from 19.30-21.00 p.m.
